What's new (in 2.6)

The WWW Counter program is continually being enhanced. Please check this section periodically to see the latest enhancements. Please look at the section ChangeLog for the list of current and past bug fixes. Please look at the Section Features for all the features.

• The contents of the authentication database and counter database are changed. Now the auth database contains the page url as key and the MD5 (RSA Data Security, Inc. MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm) of the url as value. The counter database uses the md5 of the page url as key and hits:remote_ip as value. Whoever suggested me this idea, please let me know if you you read it.

• If df parameter is specified, the counter acts like the older versions even if compiled with USE_DATABASE. It was done so that this version can be used with datafiles used by older versions.

• Binary for Windows NT is available. It has all the features of the Unix version. Built with Berkeley DB and TrueType font support. Although it passes all the tests, I would like to know how it behaves in a busy web server. Please read the NT page for the counter for details.

• Added sdbm support. sdbm is the fall back database which comes with the counter.

• New script build for compilation. It's a wrapper around the configure script.

• Documentation structure is changed. Lots of people complained that it takes long time to load the whole document. Now each section is a separate page.

• Long waited Database support! The hits can be stored in any of Berkeley DB, GNU DBM (gdbm), sdbm or ndbm Database. The "configure" script will automatically figure out what kind of database you have. If you do not have any database installed, the counter will use its own sdbm database. For reliability and robustness please use Berkeley DB. No need to use df parameter to specify a data file for each user. Please look at the section Database support for details.

• A new option log_visitor_info=Yes or No in configuration file. If log_visitor_info is yes, then a few info about log is stored in the visitor log file (visitor.log). Have a look the section Visitor log for details.

• The visitor og can be rotated with a new config option log_rotate_interval=seconds in the configuration file.

  If database support is on, the file rgb.txt gets converted to database for fast lookup automatically during installation.

• TrueType font support support. Please look at the page TrueType Fonts support for details.

• The configuration and data file of Count 2.6 is backward compatible with those of Count 2.5.
